Plans have been announced for the movie version of Fifty Shades of Grey, the bestselling novel that spawned the term “mommy porn”.
Focus Features, a division of NBC Universal, said in a statement the film would be released in the US in August next year.
It will be directed by Briton Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose previous credits include Nowhere Boy, a film about John Lennon. Kelly Marcel, who wrote the TV series Terra Nova, will write the screenplay.
There was no word on who would play the parts of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, whose steamy antics propelled EL James’s erotic trilogy to multimillion sales worldwide.
Taylor-Johnson said she was excited about the project. “I will honour the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia.”
Fans of the book have produced mock trailers in the hope of canvassing votes for those they would like to portray their favourite characters.
Among the actors are Garrett Hedlund (Tron), who gets only 734000 views compared with a trailer featuring Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) and Matt Bomer (White Collar), which garnered more than six million views.
