By Jennifer Platt for the Sunday Times
US celebrity chef Paula Deen might have been shamed by her recent racial slurs, but they have done little to dent the sales of her books.
Deen, who is famous for her Southern-style recipes, admitted that she had used racial slurs in the past and tolerated racist jokes in the workplace.
But the notoriety that followed her admission has gained her fans and sales of her previous books have been soaring. Her most recent nine books have sold seven times as many copies as they did before the scandal broke, and Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking Bible is the most popular.
However, it is unlikely that the extra money coming in from the book sales will make up for all that Deen has lost since the scandal broke.
The 66-year-old’s publisher, Ballantine Books, recently stopped the publication of all her titles – including a forthcoming cookbook that briefly reached number one on Amazon by pre-orders alone. Her agent has fled and her TV deal with the Food Network, which expires at the end of this month, will not be renewed.
Sponsors JC Penney, Walgreens, K-Mart and Sears have actively distanced themselves from her.
