Alert! South African-born Deborah Levy’s new short story collection, Black Vodka, has made it onto the shortlist for the 2013 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award.
The shortlist of six books, which had been whittled down from a longlist including Liesl Jobson and A Igoni Barrett, has just been announced. Levy, who moved from South Africa to the UK at age nine after her father, a member of the ANC, was jailed, is joined on the shortlist by David Constantine (Tea at the Midland and other stories), Tamas Dobozy (Siege 13), Joyce Carol Oates (Black Dahlia & White Rose), Peter Stamm (We’re Flying) and Claire Vaye Watkins (Battleborn). Last year, Levy’s novel Swimming Home was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
The winner of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award will be announced in the first week of July.
