Alert! The longlists for the 2015 British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) Awards have been announced and include six African writers.
Sarah Lotz has been nominated in the Best Novel category for Day Four, the follow-up on her bestseller The Three.
Chinelo Onwualu of Nigeria has been nominated in the Best Non-fiction category for her essay “Race, Speculative Fiction And Afro SF”, published by the New Left Project.
The Best Short Fiction category features four other African nominations:
- Nnedi Okorafor’s novella Binti, published by Tor.com in September 2015
- “A Short History of Migration in Five Fragments of You” by Wole Talabi, published in Omenana in June 2015
- Richard Oduor Oduku’s story “eNGAGEMENT“, published in Jalada 02: Afrofuture(s), the 2015 collection of short stories and poems published by Jalada Africa
- Sofia Samatar’s story “A Brief History in Nonduality Studies”, also published in Jalada 02: Afrofuture(s)
Unfortunately Samatar’s story won’t be eligible for the award as it is a reprint of a 2012 story. She tweeted that she alerted the BSFA of this:
my nominated story is a reprint (orig. published 2012) and so not eligible, unfortunately! i've contacted the BSFA to let them know.

Members of the BSFA will be voting during the month of January with the shortlist for each category (Novel, Short Story, Non-Fiction and Art) to be announced soon after.
Read more about the BSFA Awards and voting process:
The BSFA awards are presented annually by the British Science Fiction Association, based on a vote of BSFA members and – in recent years – members of the British national science fiction convention Eastercon. They are fan awards that not only seek to honour the most worthy examples in each category, but to promote the genre of science fiction, and get people reading, talking about and enjoying all that contemporary science fiction has to offer.
You may choose a work if YOU:

ANDMake your choices by midnight 31st January.
We are rooting for these writers as we wait for the shortlists to be announced.
