German Translation of Malaika wa Azania's Memoirs of a Born Free Announced

Memoirs of a Born FreeAlert! In addition to the North American edition announced in January, a German edition of Malaika wa Azania’s Memoirs of a Born Free: Reflections on the Rainbow Nation will be out soon from Swiss publishing house Rotpunktverlag.

Rotpunktverlag aims to promote the publication and dissemination of socialist literature. The deal was negotiated through Malaika’s US publisher, Seven Stories Press.

The German edition, titled Born Free: Mein Leben im Südafrika nach der Apartheid, was translated by Antje Papenburg and has an introduction by Simphiwe Dana. It will be available from mid-February next year.

“The significance of Memoirs of a Born Free being published beyond the borders of South Africa and being translated into the German language is immense,” Wa Azania says.

“The fact that the content has not been altered is critical. It means that this important story as told by the lion will not only reach a wider audience, but that it will do so with its legitimacy uncompromised. And nothing is more important than for the lion to tell the tale of the hunt uncompromisingly.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to be published internationally. I don’t take it for granted, precisely because I recognise that some equally important stories don’t get this important chance.”

Thabiso Mahlape, BlackBird Books publisher, says: “Memoirs of a Born Free is an important piece of literature. It is perhaps the only book available that begins to offer an explanation for the #FeesMustFall movement. It gives me great pleasure to see this book and Malaika get the recognition they both deserve.”

“In Memoirs of a Born Free, 22-year-old Malaika wa Azania reflects on her experience of post-apartheid South Africa. Whether one agrees with her analysis or not, it is an important contribution which should assist our country in an assessment of where we come from, where are and where we should be tomorrow. I urge you to read it.”former president Thabo Mbeki
