World Fantasy Administration Calls for Designs to Replace Trophy Depicting “Racist” HP Lovecraft

The World Fantasy Award is calling on all artists and designers to submit their ideas for a new trophy.

This follows on the World Fantasy Award’s decision last month to discontinue the use of the HP Lovecraft statuette. From 2016, Lovecraft’s bust will no longer adorn the mantelpieces of award-winning fantasy authors, owing to the increased uproar among authors about Lovecraft’s “fundamental racism”.

One author who was ahead of her time in critiquing the so-called father of the horror genre is Nigerian-American fantasy and science-fiction author Nnedi Okorafor, who became the first black author to win the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2011, for Who Fears Death.

The World Fantasy Administration does not confront the controversy head-on, but does specify that the new trophy will not resemble any person, living or dead.

Submissions are open from now until 2 April, 2016. How would you like to see the World Fantasy Award represented? Tweet your suggestions to #WorldFantasyAward.

World Fantasy Award Call for Submissions

The Administration has decided that it is time to change the trophy for the World Fantasy Awards. We appreciate Gahan Wilson’s design in use for more than four decades and his contributions to the World Fantasy Convention and the Awards.

Between now and April 2, 2016 the World Fantasy Awards Administration will welcome submissions from artists within the arts community proficient in the three-dimensional form, for a new physical trophy for the World Fantasy Award. The ideal design will represent both fantasy and horror, without bearing any physical resemblance to any person, living or dead.

Interested artists should send inquiries to the WFA administration at: worldfantasyawarddesign@gmail.com.
