Love Books, one of Johannesburg’s best-loved independent bookshops, has made The New York Times!
Holly Bass recommends Love Books in an article titled “Where to Go in Melville, Johannesburg”, along with Great Eastern Food Bar, One of Each, Superella, The Service Station.
“While some lament that the bohemian enclave’s glory days have passed,” Bass writes, “a pleasant daytime walk along tree-lined Fifth Avenue, away from the main Seventh Street strip, opens onto its quiet delights: a clutch of antiques shops, independent designers and good dining.”
Love Books was started in 2009 by Jaci Jenkins and Kate Rogan, who produced Jenny Crwys-Williams’ Radio 702 book show for many years. It’s a popular destination for serious readers and regularly hosts book launches and events.

Needlepoint signs denote the sections of this welcoming shop with contemporary novels, poetry, history, art books and cookbooks. Comfortable chairs dot the space for bibliophiles to get cozy, and maybe enjoy a cup of coffee from the adjacent Service Station.
