Asymptote, a quarterly magazine dedicated to literary translation and contemporary writing, has sent out a call for entries for its “Close Approximations” translation contest.
The contest is aimed at translators at the beginning of their careers, and invites translations in three genres: poetry, fiction and literary non-fiction.
The winner and runner-up of each category will walk away with 1 000 USD (about R14 000) and 500 USD, respectively.
The winner and runner-up will also be featured in the April 2016 issue of Asymptote.
Translations must be into English, but may come from any other language, and Asymptote “especially welcomes” contemporary work translated from underrepresented languages, although “neither the work’s original language or its contemporaneity will be a factor in the judging”.
To enter, submit between five to 10 pages of translated poetry or 10 to 25 pages of translated fiction or non-fiction on the Asymptote submissions page. Deadline for entries is 15 December, 2015.
Over the years, Asymptote has featured new work by Breyten Breytenbach, JM Coetzee, Patrick Modiano, Ismail Kadare, David Mitchell, Haruki Murakami, Herta Müller and many others.
Earlier this year, SJ Naudé wrote an illuminating article on his experience of translating his award-winning Afrikaans short stories in Alfabet van die voëls to English, published as The Alphabet of Birds.
