Murtada al-Shamikh, the prodigal son of Tunis, takes his society’s measure by the state of the city, and the major achievement of the author is the authenticity with which he endows the damaged yet yearning and aspiring voice with which the narrator addresses us, the neighbourhood of Dar al-Basha, the city of Tunis, or himself. It is a discourse permeated with Tunisian, Arabic, Qu’ranic and Sufi references – usefully signposted by the translator.
