The longlists for the FT/OppenheimerFunds Emerging Voices Awards have been announced, with the fiction category being dominated by African authors.

The fiction section for the inaugural edition of the awards was open to authors from Africa and the Middle East, but nine of the 10 longlisted writers are from Africa – including South Africans Mandla Langa and Ingrid Winterbach – with just one author from a non-African country: Elias Khoury of Lebanon.

Langa and Winterbach are longlisted ahead of big names such as Christopher Hope, Damon Galgut, Imraan Coovadia, Mia Couto and Nuruddin Farah, who are all on the list of entries.

The awards also acknowledge Latin American and Caribbean artists and Asia-Pacific filmmakers, with over 100 countries in total represented, and offer $40 000 to each individual winner. The judges aim to reward those whose work shows outstanding talent and in some way furthers global understanding of their region.

Finalists for each category will be announced on 7 August and winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in New York on 5 October.
