Revenge Wears PradaRevenge Wears Prada
Lauren Weisberger (Harper Collins, R215)
**
Clunky, boring, frustrating and farfetched, this one-dimensional sequel to the hit novel The Devil Wears Prada contains no revenge, very little Prada and only a few appearances by the “devil”. Weisberger should’ve taken note that the best creation of her semi-autobiographical first novel was the icy-cold Miranda Priestly (rumoured to be based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour). Instead, the focus remains on whiny Andy Sachs who, despite wedded bliss, babies and a successful career, is inexplicably still obsessed with Miranda. Weisberger paints Andy into annoying, self-destructive corners, and when a non-threatening Miranda steps back into her life, it’s an anti-climax. — Jennifer Platt @jenniferdplatt

And the Mountains EchoedAnd the Mountains Echoed
Khaled Hosseini (Bloomsbury, R275)
****
Hosseini’s third book is as beautiful and tragic as his previous two, woven through with myth and magic and “faith that the world will not destroy you”. The plot follows the leitmotifs of his oeuvre: loss and unbearable secrets mix with Afghan wars and childhood memories dulled by new lives far away. Finding truth often starts with the unravelling of lies which, in this novel, centre on an unthinkable act that tears apart Abdullah and his beloved sister Pari. The complexities of the choices Hosseini’s characters make slowly unfold and expose histories which can never be ignored. — Chantelle Gray van Heerden @CGrayvH

Dead Man's TimeDead Man’s Time
Peter James (Pan Macmillan, R207)
****
In the ninth instalment of James’s Detective Inspector Roy Grace series, Grace is tasked with uncovering the nasty truth behind a gruesome home invasion in Brighton that leads him to the shady underworld of illicit antique dealing. James has humanised his detective: he’s overcome his demons and found happiness. But this is threatened by unresolved mysteries and an old enemy hell-bent on revenge. — Sally Partridge @sapartridge
