UK-based independent publishing house And Other Stories and Archipelago Books in North America have announced a simultaneous acquisition of Ivan Vladislavić’s The Folly from agent Isobel Dixon at Blake Friedmann Literary Agency in London.

The acquisition was announced by Stefan Tobler of And Other Stories and Jill Schoolman of Archipelago in late December.

The Folly was Vladislavić’s first novel, published in 1993 and re-released in May last year by Umuzi in a special edition, a process he called “quite strange and a bit unnerving”. His most recent book is Flashback Hotel: Early Stories, which combines two previous collections of short stories, Missing Persons (1990) and Propaganda by Monuments (1996).

And Other Stories published Vladislavić’s Double Negative in 2013, and The Restless Supermarket in 2014, in Europe and North America. Vladislavić’s new collection of short stories, 101 Detectives, is due out in June in Europe and North America, while publication of The Folly is set for September 2016 in the UK and Commonwealth. A date is yet to be set for the US publication.

“Archipelago is delighted to be publishing Vladislavić’s The Folly,” Schoolman says on the Blake Friedmann website. “The novel explores friendship and community (and home improvement) with his own unique blend of humor, empathy, and quirky detail. It’s a gem, and Vladislavić is one of the most inventive and compassionate writers working today.”

Tobler says: “Ivan Vladislavić could well be the next South African writer to win the Booker Prize and become a household name. He deserves it.

“Part of his genius is that he tries something new with every book and so we’re excited that our fourth book by him will also be published by Archipelago in the US in 2016, as Jill Schoolman at Archipelago is as excited as we are about his writing.”

Meanwhile, And Other Stories have revealed their cover for 101 Detectives. Here it is, in all it’s crime scene glory:
