“My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week — with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.”

With these words Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang in the new year on a post on his Facebook page. He consequently created a page on the social network called “A Year of Books” where a new book will be chosen and discussed every two weeks. In less than a week the page has attracted 223,804 likes (and counting).

The End of PowerThe first book to be read by this modern book club is The End of Power: From Boardrooms to Battlefields and Churches to States, Why Being in Charge Isn’t What It Used to Be by Moisés Naím.

Zuckerberg notes that this book “explores how the world is shifting to give individual people more power that was traditionally only held by large governments, militaries and other organizations” and says that he is “looking forward to reading this book and exploring this in more detail”.

Unsurprisingly, Zuckerbergs endorsement of Naím’s book has sent sales off the charts with the publishers rushing to reprint the book. According to reports they had no idea this would happen and, along with the author, only found out when Zuckerberg wrote about it on his Facebook page. Matthew Zeitlin writes on Buzzfeed News:

Thanks to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Moisés Naím’s The End of Power has shot up over 44,000 places on Amazon’s ranking of book sales, from 44,369th before January to 10th on Monday night. For its e-book edition in Amazon’s Kindle Store, the book has gone from 191,086th to 34th, according to data provided by Amazon.

CNN spoke to Naím, asking him about his first reaction to the news that his book was chosen by as the first one for Zuckerberg’s “A Year of Books”. The author talks about his book and addresses the irony of one of the most powerful men in modern society choosing a book like his.
