Adam Stower, Jesse Breytenbach and Joey Hi-Fi spoke to Verushka Louw about what makes a successful book jacket at the Open Book Festival last weekend.
Stower spoke about the iconic Tintin covers, saying that they are like Bond movie posters; you know what you’re going to get and you want it all the same.
Hi-Fi, who won a British Fantasy Award this year, said the main thing he looks for in a book cover is brave design and a beautiful finish, while Breytenbach said he liked covers that don’t seem to tell you anything about the book, but then make complete sense when you read it.
Louw asked the illustrators spoke about their favourite cover designs, celebrity illustrators, and their dream drawing jobs.
