Alert! Lauren Beukes‘ The Shining Girls has won its fifth award: The 2014 British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel (the August Derleth Award), while illustrator and graphic designer extraordinaire Joey Hi-fi was announced the winner of the award for Best Artist.
The Shining Girls was up against House of Small Shadows by Adam Nevill; Mayhem by Sarah Pinborough; NOS4R2 by Joe Hill; Path of Needles by Alison Littlewood and The Year of the Ladybird by Graham Joyce. The judges for this category were Cate Gardner, Jim McLeod, Mark West, Pauline Morgan and Thana Niveau.

Other awards for Beukes’ international bestselling paranormal horror about a serial killer include: Strand Magazine Critics Award for Best Novel; the Exclusive Books Book of the Year: Reader’s Choice Award, RT Book Awards Best Suspense Thriller and the 2013/2014 University of Johannesburg Prizes for South African Writing in English.

Judges Jennie Gyllblad, PM Buchan and Rachel Kendall declared Hi-Fi the Best Artist from the illustrious list of nominees including Adam Oehlers, Ben Baldwin, Daniele Serra, Tula Lotay, and Vincent Chong. Hi-Fi is one of South-Africa’s best illustrators and responsible for many celebrated covers, including all of Beukes’ local books.

Winning in the category for Best Anthology was the Solaris collection End of the Road, which includes “Bingo”, a short story by writing duo Louis Greenberg and Sarah Lotz, writing as SL Grey.
The award ceremony took place in York during the annual FantasyCon organised by The British Fantasy Society.
