The First Fifteen Lives of Harry AugustThe First Fifteen Lives of Harry August
Claire North (Orbit Books)

Book fiend
There are plenty of Groundhog Day-type books and films out there, but this one is entertaining and fresh. Imagine the melancholia of living your life over and over again with memories of all your tragic past lives swirling in your head. This is Harry August’s life. By his eleventh, he is understandably gatvol. But then he receives a message from a little girl about an impending apocalypse. He starts to investigate, not knowing that his own actions could be the catalyst.

The Headmaster's WifeThe Headmaster’s Wife
Thomas Christopher Green (Corvus)
****
Book thrill
A middle-aged man is arrested wandering naked through the Central Park snow. Arthur Winthrop is the strait-laced, married headmaster of an elite East Coast private school. He confesses to bemused police interrogators that he had a passionate affair with a student which turned into a dark and perhaps deadly obsession. This is a pellucid exposure of the rot that can lurk behind privilege, of the emotionally crippling compromises that ‘happy’ marriages can demand, and how the cumulative layering of regret can undo us.
