The Story of Anna P, as Told by HerselfKhalil's JourneyThe Jacana Literary Foundation (JLF) has announced that from 2015 the European Union Literary Award will be replaced with the Dinaane Debut Fiction Award.

The Foundation has been administering the R25 000 prize for the last ten years and will continue to do so, with local and international funding.

The award will continue to be open to “unpublished English-language manuscripts by debut writers”. Penny Busetto won the award in 2013 for The Story of Anna P, as Told by Herself with Ashraf Jamal winning the previous edition for Khalil’s Journey.

‘Dinaane’ is Setswana for “telling stories to one another out loud”, which the Foundation feels, “connotes the many strands of conversation which weave into the common language of fiction”.

The deadline for manuscript submissions is 1 September. More information and the entry form can be found on Jacana Media’s website.

Press release:

The Jacana Literary Foundation (JLF) is happy to announce that the first Dinaane Debut Fiction Award will, from 2015, replace the European Union Literary Award. The EU Literary Award has been administered by Jacana for the past ten years with generous support from various European Union member-states and partners. The Dinaane Debut Fiction Award will continue to be administered by the JLF with funding sourced locally and abroad.

The newly launched Dinaane Award is, like its predecessor, open to unpublished English-language manuscripts by debut writers. In renaming the award and moving into a new era, we wanted to find a word which connotes the many strands of conversation which weave into the common language of fiction. The word ‘dinaane’ in Setswana means ‘telling stories to one another out loud’ and felt like a word which was evocative, accurate and simple.

The deadline for submissions of manuscripts for the first Dinaane Award is 1 September 2014. The winning manuscript will be published by Jacana Media in 2015. For the entry form and further details please click here.
