Fear NothingFear Nothing
Lisa Gardner (Headline)
****
Book thrill
Although Gardner has some irritating verbal mannerisms, she tells a terrific story: a thriller with some horror in places, and with considerable emotional and psychological depth. Her characters are striking: a detective with a viciously painful shoulder injury; a psychologist with a genetic inability to feel physica pain and an expert at (yes) therapy for pain-sufferers; and a serial-killer on the loose who leaves romantic calling-cards. The grand climax, apart from being very gory, is also deeply moving.

PostmortemPostmortem: The Doctor Who Walked Away
Maria Phalime (Tafelberg)
****
Book buff
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi would do well to read this revealing memoir. He would learn much about what is wrong with our health system – and, more importantly, what steps can be taken to improve it. Maria Phalime was the pride of her Soweto community, an industrious girl who rose above her straitened background. After nine years of study and four years practising in the horrific trenches of public hospitals she walked away. Her thoughtful notes on why she turned her back on the system make for a valuable, insightful book.
