Verdict: critical carrot
Asked what Nelson Mandela had been fighting for all his life, Walter Sisulu responded simply “ordinary respect”. It is, of course, the very antithesis of apartheid. John Carlin lists integrity, respect (interestingly, Mandela included punctuality in this category), charisma and empathy as Madiba’s key qualities in this “short book about a big man”. Clearly, he was an admirable human being.
But as Carlin demonstrates, he was also a shrewd and tough politician. His life, so often described as a long walk, might equally well be called the long view.
