Alert! The shortlist for the 2016 International Dublin Literary Award has been announced.
The 10-book shortlist includes Man Booker Prize winner Marlon James, Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson and Rwandan debut author Scholastique Mukasonga.
Mukasonga left for France before the Rwandan genocide, during which 27 members of her family, including her mother, were killed. Our Lady of the Nile is described as a prelude to the genocide, in which a girls’ high school becomes a microcosm of 1970s Rwanda. The book was first published in French in 2012 as Notre-Dame du Nil – winning three French literary prizes – and the translation was a finalist for the 2015 FT/OppenheimerFunds Emerging Voices Award.
Books for the International Dublin Literary Award – formerly known as the Impac award – are nominated by invited public libraries in cities throughout the world, on the basis of “high literary merit”.
With €100,000 (about R1,6-million) prize money, the Dublin Award is the most valuable literary prize in the world for a single work of fiction in English. If the winning book is translated, the author receives €75,000 and the translator €25,000.
Three South African writers – Zakes Mda, Mandla Langa and Imraan Coovadia – were nominated for the award.
