Predator
Wilbur Smith written with Tom Cain (HarperCollins)
What books are on your bedside table?
I don’t read in bed. There are other, better things to do. I do, however, read in my study and have about 300 books.
What music helps you write?
I listen to music when I listen to music. I write when I write. I don’t mix the two as it’s quite a distraction.
What is the strangest thing you’ve done while researching a book?
I went to the South Pole and stayed at the base camp. It was the coldest I’ve been in my life.
What is the last thing you read that made you laugh out loud?
PG Wodehouse makes me laugh repeatedly. He is one of my favourite comedians.
What keeps you awake at night?
My wife. Seriously, though, I sleep pretty well.
What are you working on next?
There’s so much waiting for me to work on. And now that I have bright young co-workers, I will write as long as I live.
You’re hosting a literary dinner with three writers. Who’s invited?
Stephen King, I admire his work. He is one of the best writers. John Steinbeck and William Shakespeare, although they will be difficult to invite today.
Has a book ever changed your mind about something?
Good non-fiction changes my mind about things all the time, especially if it is about history and is different to the points of view you have.
Which phrases do you most overuse?
“Yes, I think I will have another small one.”
Who is your favourite fictional hero?
Sean Courtney. He is one of the first characters that I developed and I am still writing about his family today.
