BlackassVerdict: carrot

Barrett’s highly anticipated first novel centers on Furo Wariboko, a young black Nigerian who wakes up one day to discover he’s white. The Kafkaesque conceit plays out in a deadpan manner, and Barrett uses the device to explore the social dynamics of Lagos, Africa’s largest city. At first, his transformation is a source of embarrassment—and in conflict with his accent and name—but once he lands a high-paying job, Furo realizes his new appearance comes with benefits. Part of the Nigerian literary renaissance – which includes renowned authors Teju Cole and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – Barrett has earned international recognition as a writer ready to shake the world.
